BONDED
FILLINGS
ADVANTAGES
OF BONDED FILLINGS
1.
A bonded filling is already set hard before you leave the surgery
so that no precautions are needed when chewing on a new filling. However
you should wait until the numbness from the local anaesthetic has worn
off otherwise you can accidently bite your cheek, lip or tongue. In contrast,
the old amalgam fillings required at least six hours to harden before you
should chew on them.
2.
Little or no debri remains in the mouth after completion of a bonded
filling.
3.
Aesthetics - your bonded filling will be a close match to the original
colour of your tooth.
4.
The base used under the bonded filling actually bonds chemically to the
tooth substance - ensuring a good marginal seal. A good seal is important
in preventing bacteria from getting underneath the filling where they can
cause sensitivity and start off new decay. Amalgam fillings rely
on a mechnical seal that is subject to leakage.
5.
The base used under the bonded filling slowly releases fluoride, protecting
your tooth from further decay.
6.
The bonded filling is completed and polished in the one appointment and
should feel smooth. You won't have to return for a polish as with amalgam
fillings.
TIPS
FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE BONDED FILLINGS
* Brush
normally to remove plaque after each meal
* If
gum tissue is inflamed, or bleeds, continue brushing thoroughly after each
meal and floss your teeth daily.
* Have
your teeth checked every 6 months
* If
the edge of the bonding feels rough, return to your dentist so that the
edge can be smoothed off and polished.
* Don't
be concerned about the initial feeling of extra tooth size.
This
sensation is normal and you will adjust to it within a few days, or weeks.
* As
with normal teeth, avoid using excessive force by chewing bones, ice, hard
candy or biting your nails - this can fracture the bonding material.
* Remember
that smoking can stain bonded teeth.
* above
all, wear your new smile proudly, it shows the world that you take very
good care of yourself.
