XEROSTAR DENTAL EQUIPMENT - HISTORY

Early days
In 1990 I purchased some imported dental suction equipment from a local dental supply house. After the installation was complete, I was not impressed with the weakness of the suction and soon after it began to break down and repairs were needed.
Cleaning blocked hoses and equipment was beginning to become a weekly chore.
These problems forced me to find an alternative to the unacceptable cycle of breakdowns and repairs with the inevitable bills and lost income due to downtime.
See my article "a lighthearted look at inventing".

Experiments
I began experimenting  with different separators that I made up out of bits and pieces.
I used an ordinary vacuum cleaner to create a powerful suction. I experimented with chairside equipment.  I needed to replace the one that blocked up regularly and  therefore was too unreliable.

Cleaning solutions
At about the same time I began experimenting with different cleaning solutions. I found that the more antiseptics that I poured down the suction, the more blocked and smelly the whole thing became!
Proprietary solutions were expensive and didn't seem to stop the build up of detritus in the hoses.
They didn't smell too good either !

Enzymes
Then I heard about an enzyme product that was being used to maintain septic sewerage tanks in Western Australia.
The reports showed this product to be nothing short of miraculous!
I approached the biochemist responsible, and discussed the need for a better suction system cleaner.
"XeroJet" was the end result. This has been tested for over 6 years now and is used by many Perth dentists.

Early Standards
Eventually I had a separator which worked faultlessly for over 3 years.   This was to become the "Standard Separator".
The suction power was brilliant, there no breakdowns and no maintenance was required.
The only interruption was when the vacuum cleaner stopped. (this proved to be only worn out carbon brushes!)  I simply disconnected the vacuum cleaner and replaced it with the one from our cleaning cupboard!
I was literally "back in business" within 5 minutes!
Not even a hint of my earlier catastrophes!
The carbon brushes were replaced in the first unit and that is still in use to this day!

Switches
The mechanical switches at the chairside had also proved very unreliable so as part of the chairside equipment I developed a "light sensor switch" that allows the vacuum motor to be switched on and off without the need for any mechanical switching.

Exhibitions
I decided to start making copies of my system and upgraded it's appearance.
This resulted in the "Deluxe Separator" which I exhibited at the Melbourne exhibition in 1997.  Several visitors remarked that my deluxe system seemed "too large" and that they would not have room for it in their practice.

More Experiments!
Upon returning to Perth, I started experimenting with "shorter" separators. This proved very difficult at first, as the first short  models did not function well at all.  Water and detritus were being sucked into the vacuum cleaner with disastrous results.
Eventually I had a major breakthrough and found a way to separate water and air very efficiently without the use of any moving parts!
The first result was the "Medium Separator".
Further efforts enabled me to produce the "Mini Separator" which is I feel was my "Piece de Resistance" The Mini-Sep is barely 30 cm (12") in height.
The Medium and Mini Separators were un-veiled at the 1998 dental exhibition in Perth.

Latest developments
My new project is now complete! A Mini Separator combined with a vacuum cleaner motor in one self contained housing!   This is called the XeroStar V8.
This unit will appeal to those who want to save even more space and want to have a more "conventional looking" piece of equipment. Of course the low price of this unit will also be one of it's most attractive features.   I envisage a fairly short installation time  with minimal down time. Even changing the motor will only take about 15 minutes.  This little beauty has 1300 Watts of Power! The sound insulation makes it much quieter than you would expect!  This unit is undergoing further development.

17th March 2000 - Important Announcement!

* SuperVac unveiled!

This unit is designed to replace the vacuum cleaner
that we normally recommend.
Note: a vacuum cleaner is adequate for intermittent use for short periods and it will
last for two years or more under these conditions.

Most vacuum cleaners rely on the continuous flow of suction air for motor cooling. Restrictions in suction air flow can lead to
motor overheating and subsequent failure.

A thermostat can prevent overheating, however it can interupt
normal operation for 20 minutes or more.

Now - the new XeroStar SuperVac has arrived!

We have designed the XeroStar SuperVac for exceptional long life
under tough conditions where air flow to the vacuum motor
is restricted for extended periods.

This is achieved by giving the electric motor it's own
independent supply of cooling air, that can not be interupted,
even if the vacuum intake is blocked.

* SuperQ Vac unveiled!

This unit is similar to the SuperVac except that it has more
built- in sound attenuation.

This makes it not only a very powerful unit but also an
exceptionally quiet unit as well.

Now - the new XeroStar SuperQVac has arrived!

Introducing the improved SuperQVac!

This model is now much easier to service.
Replacement carbon brushes are supplied in a modular form and the process of changing the brushes has become very simple. No tools are required.
Important - Electronic Brush-Life warning indicator.
Avoid costly motor burnout by replacing the carbon brushes before they wear to zero.

Note: XeroStar & XeroJet are Registered TradeMarks

Future Projects
I have just finished a prototype for  a dental surgery light and I have been working on a new dental operating unit.
