XEROSTAR
DENTAL EQUIPMENT
How
does the Xerostar system work ?
The
XeroStar suction system has been designed to give maximum performance without
being highly technical. The result is a simple system that requires minimal
maintenance.
When
the handpiece is lifted, a photo resistor in the handpiece cradle is exposed
to ambient light.
This
causes the electronic circuit to activate a heavy duty relay in the electronic
control (relay) module. See electronic module
The
relay switches on the power to the vacuum cleaner. The vacuum created inside
the separator causes the ball valve to close instantly. A vacuum
is then created in the hose, filter and handpiece.
Aspirated
matter passes through the chairside hose into the filter. Particles
of detritus larger than 50 microns are caught in the filter. The air slurry
mixture is then drawn into the separator and subjected to centrifugal flow.
The
liquid falls to the base of the separator.
The
air continues upwards to the output tube at the top of the separator barrel
and then down through the non return air valve to the vacuum cleaner.
(see
diagram below)
Upon
replacing the handpiece, ambient light is excluded from the photo resistor
and the circuit returns to its resting state, switching off the relay.
The vacuum cleaner stops, the ball valve falls and releases the liquid
into the p-trap.
The
non return air valve closes to prevent backflow of air.
If
the liquid waste can not flow away due to a blockage in the p-trap or waste
pipes then the fluid level will rise until the safety float valve is actuated.
This automatically cuts the power to the vacuum cleaner.
After
a time delay of 10 seconds the vacuum cleaner is allowed to restart.
If the fluid level has fallen, then normal operation continues, however
if the fluid level has not fallen, the power will not be switched on again.
An
important requirement of the system is the regular use of the bio-enzyme
Xerojet liquid that breaks down all biodegradable matter, rendering it
odourless and less adherent.
Build-up
of detritus is minimized and cleaning is required only after long intervals.
